Toilet Training.
Though toilet training may seem straightforward at a glance, there’s not a one-size-fits-all approach to this essential daily living skill. Your BCBA will use an individualized approach to toilet train your child.
Signs that your child is ready for potty training:
Hiding in another room or area while soiling their diaper.
Grabbing or trying to take off their diaper when it’s full.
Interest in sitting on the toilet.
Set for success (BEFORE potty training):
Practice sitting on the potty. Begin with short increments of time and reward your child with a small treat (think a chocolate chip or Smartie). Increase the duration of their sit-time to at least 5-10 minutes.
Try to catch your child before they soil their diaper and sit them on the potty. If you catch them mid-void, place them on the potty and have them finish in the toilet. Reward your child for any excrement in the toilet.
Identify reinforcers that will be provided specific to success with toileting.
Get the big kid undies and potty seat ready!
Potty party!
Your BCBA will provide and implement a potty program that uses a systematic approach to the following goals:
Increasing the length of time between voiding.
Having the child void immediately after sitting on the toilet.
